What is the Sidr tree?
Ziziphus spina-christi is an evergreen or semi-evergreen tree native to arid regions of North Africa and the Middle East. It can grow to 10 metres and is remarkably drought-tolerant, surviving on minimal rainfall. The tree produces small, cream to yellow flowers in clusters, followed by small round fruits similar to jujubes. The flowers yield an exceptionally prized honey — Sidr honey from Yemen is among the most expensive honeys in the world.

The Sidr tree is mentioned in the Quran and has deep significance in Islamic tradition. Sidr leaves are used in the ritual washing of the deceased. Can Sidr tree be grown in the UK?
Ziziphus spina-christi requires hot summers, low humidity and good drainage. It is occasionally grown in very sheltered spots in the warmest parts of England, or as a container plant overwintered in a frost-free greenhouse. The related Ziziphus jujuba (Chinese jujube) is hardier and more commonly available in UK specialist nurseries.
